10 Things You Should Avoid When Traveling to Cancun [Tips from a Local]
1. Avoid Drinking tap water, or not!;)
Tap water is not drinkable in Cancun and almost anywhere in Mexico, unless you have the Water to Go Bottle. It’s amazing. I have just received mine and it will always be by my side. The Water-to-go filter kills 99.99% of bacteria, even from Mexican tap water. You fill in the bottle and while you drink it, purifies through the filter. It lasts around 200 lt of water.
In Mexico’s tropical weather, it’s very important for your health to stay hydrated and water to go bottle help you do just that. You will never be thirsty. Anywhere you go, just fill in your water-to-go bottle with any tap water and you will be drinking delicious purified water.
2. Avoid Timeshare Presentations
Timeshare presentations can offer some perks, but they often come with hidden costs in terms of time and money. If something is too good to be truth it probably isn’t true. If you’re not genuinely interested in a timeshare investment, it’s best to politely decline these offers and use your time to explore more of Cancun or enjoy the beach.
Also keep in mind that even the US embassy in Mexico has warned citizen from Time Share and rental scams
“Timeshare owners across the country are being scammed out of millions of dollars by companies promising to sell or rent the unsuspecting victims’ timeshares. In 2022, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received over 600 complaints with losses of approximately $39.6 million from victims contacted by scammers regarding timeshares owned in Mexico.“

3. Avoid Untrustworthy Tour Agencies
Cancun is a hub for amazing tours, but it’s crucial to select reputable agencies. One of the biggest scams in Cancun comes from fake tour companies that sell very cheap tours take the deposit and then vanish.
Avoiding this type of situation is very easy. Just refrain from buying tours on the street or from beach vendors and only book through the reception of your hotel or online agencies such as VIATOR or Get Your Guide.
4. Avoid Visiting During Overcrowded Seasons
The best time to visit Cancun for weather is usually the winter, from December through April, however, good weather comes at a cost. And not only financially. Besides being the most expensive time of the year to travel to Cancun it’s also the most crowded. March and April are party time, the time when spring breakers travel the most, so you have more parties and events but also a lot of crowds.
Easter week is the craziest time of the year and the busiest because not only foreigner tourists travels but it’s the biggest festivity for locals too, so it’s all incredibly crowded everywhere. Definitely to avoid.
Plan your trip during quieter months like April, May, or November through the beginning of December for a more serene experience and better deals on accommodations and activities.
The weather should be great in those months, but since it’s low season, you can book last minute and should check the forecast before booking.

5. Avoid Packing Only Beach Attire
Cancun is one of the most popular beach destinations in Mexico and of course, beach attire is a must. However, if you love to explore, you should also pack hiking boots which are much better than walking in the jungle.
Hiking in Cancun is not the most popular activity, but you can have nice walks or use the gym of your hotel to keep your fitness routine alive.
So make sure you pack some gym attire as well. Also a shawl or a warm jacket in winter together with a raincoat may come in handy in case of unpredictable weather.

6. Avoid Limiting Yourself to Tourist-Only Areas
While the Hotel Zone offers amazing beaches and unlimited watersport activities, incredible restaurants, and luxury shopping centers such as Plaza la Isla or Luxury Avenue, Cancun has much more to offer.
Avoid spending all your time in these areas and venture out to explore local neighborhoods, beaches, and hidden gems for a more authentic experience.
Explore the colorful Mercado 28 and Mercado 23 or Parque La Palapa, or go for a run at the Malecon Tajamar in Downtown Cancun and enjoy the slow paced Cancun life like a local .
You can also enjoy a food tour in downtown to experience the authentic Mexican cuisine where locals eat.

BEST AUTHENTIC FOOD TOUR IN CANCUN
I took this tour out of curiosity and had the time of my life. I tried unique and delicious local street food and local Mexican restaurants that I had never noticed before! It’s a full immersion into Mexican cuisine in Cancun.
7. Avoid Carrying US Dollars only and Exchanging Money at the Airport
Although the US Dollar is commonly accepted, you will need some Mexican Pesos for tips, souvenir shops and market stalls or taxi rides if you don’t want to be ripped off with the currency exchange.
The most convenient way to get MXN (Mexican Pesos) is by withdrawing it from the cash machine from Mexican Banks.
Otherwise, you can use Casa de Cambio (exchange bureaus) or Local banks to exchance your currency into Mexican Pesos. Avoid exchanging money at the airport if you don’t want to lose money.
Also stay away from US$ Cash Machine because the commission fee that you will pay is extremely high.
What do you need Mexican Pesos For?
- Taxi
- Markets
- Tips (Please keep in mind that Tips are not mandatory in Mexico and they cannot be demanded
- Gas Stations – If you rent a car (and you should), sometimes in gas stations the Credit Card POS is not working. So having some cash can help.

8. Avoid Carrying Too Much Valuables on your trip
One of the most important safety tips that I can give you is not to flaunt your wealth. And one of the ways of doing it is by avoiding carrying jewelry or expensive attire. Also, Overpacking can hinder your mobility and enjoyment. Bring only what you need, focusing on essentials that will make your trip comfortable and hassle-free.
9. Avoid Staying Confined to Your Hotel
Cancun is more than just resorts and beaches. Although you will want to enjoy your luxury hotels on the beautiful Cancun beach, I would keep a couple of half days to go out and explore.
Whether by renting a car for greater freedom or booking one of the amazing tours in Cancun and checking out some of the most incredible sites historical sites, or snorkeling spots. Go out for an adventure in Cancun and enjoy Mexico.

10. Avoid Using Taxis (especially at the airport)
Taxis are the most expensive and least safe way to get around Cancun and from the airport to your hotel. There are many other ways to move around that give you more peace of mind and let you save some time and money.
This private transportation service is the one I recommend and sometimes use.
Otherwise, a cheaper way is the ADO bus and shuttles. You can check out my post on how to get from the Cancun International Airport to your hotel.
You can also rent a car when you arrive if you are planning to drive in Cancun and explore around the area.
