Initially, the Mayan city of Zací was overtaken by the Spanish in 1545 and has preserved its colonial charm ever since. Now Zací is the name of the beautiful, refreshing cenote that you can find in the heart of town.

2. Rent a Car from Cancun to Valladolid

Renting a car gives you the freedom to move around on your own schedule and explore off-the-beaten-path cenotes and ruins.

There are several rental car agencies right at the Cancun airport, or if you plan to spend a few days in Cancun before heading to Valladolid, you can rent a car there.

But since renting a car in Cancun is in high demand, you should book your car in advance. I recommend using Discover Cars, as it allows you to compare different rates from many companies and choose the ones that suit you best.

The drive from Cancun to Valladolid is safe and easy to navigate. You can take the toll highway 180D from Cancun all the way to Valladolid.

The road is in good condition, and there are very easy-to-read signs showing you where to exit to get to Valladolid.

The drive will take you about two hours, and there is rarely much traffic on the highway. Just be aware that there are often sections of construction where you will need to slow down where they are working on the road.

Renting a car gives you complete freedom to explore the Yucatan at your own pace.

Basic Info

  • Duration: 2 hours direct drive
  • Cost: $25-45 USD/day + gas ($15-20) + tolls ($10)
  • Route: Highway 180D (toll road)
  • Distance: 160 km / 100 miles
  • Booking: Discover Cars to compare rates

Driving Route

Take Highway 180D from Cancun to Valladolid. The toll road is well-maintained with clear signage. Important: Toll booths only accept cash pesos – no cards or USD.

Alternative: Free road (Libre) takes longer but lets you explore small towns, hidden cenotes, and colonial churches.

🚗 Where to stop between Cancun and Valladolid?

If you want to turn your drive from Cancun to Valladolid into a road trip, there are several popular spots on the way to check out.

The Yucatan is famous for its cenotes, and having a rental car gives you the freedom to stop at lesser-known cenotes.

While driving, it is not uncommon to see cenote entrance signs.

Most cenotes are on private property, so the owners charge a small entrance fee and allow you to access the cenote.

Yal Ku Cenote and Zazil Tunich Cenote are two popular cenotes to visit in this area.

If you do not mind going a little bit out of your way, the Ek Balam ruins are to the north of Valladolid. This site is famous for its ceremonial arch and the Oval Palace.

If you are into history and want to see some less-visited ruins, these are a great option for you.

You can check out my Cancun Itinerary for further recommendations.

🚗 Is it safe to drive from Cancun to Valladolid?

Yes, it is safe to drive from Cancun to Valladolid. You can take the modern, well-maintained toll road that is easy to navigate.

In general, it is not recommended to drive at night in Mexico. You should plan to drive only during the day and give yourself extra time when moving between cities.

If I am not in a rush, I would always prefer to drive on the regular roads (Libre) rather than the toll roads (cuota), just because it lets you drive through small towns and see spectacular churches or bump into a hidden cenote.

Either way is very safe to drive in the Yucatan Peninsula overall.

Car Rental Scam Warnings

Renting a car in Cancun can be overwhelming, especially when you have heard a lot of scam stories. Some of them are true, unfortunately. I have been renting cars in Cancun many times, and I have had my share of mishappenings. This is why I now use Discover Cars: I know I can get extra coverage. But still, you need to be a bit extra careful. Here are two main issues you can find:

Insurance scam: Companies claim you must buy their insurance. This is false. If you have coverage through a credit card or personal policy, you don’t need theirs. If they insist, find another company.

Damage scam: Take extensive photos/videos of the car before and after rental. Document every scratch and dent. Return with plenty of time before your flight. They target rushed travelers.

Having said that, I still believe driving is the best way to explore a country, when possible, and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is one of the safest places to drive. So, just keep a positive attitude and make the most of your time in Mexico. 🙂

4. Private Transfer from Cancun to Valladolid

Booking a private shuttle to take you from Cancun to Valladolid is a fast and stress-free way to travel.

You will need to book the shuttle in advance, and the driver will be waiting for you at the Cancun airport or will pick you up at your Cancun hotel.

They will take you and your luggage to their comfortable, air-conditioned car and away you will go. You will not need to waste any time waiting for other passengers to arrive.

A private shuttle from Cancun to Valladolid will cost a little over 350 for up to 3 passengers.

Private shuttles are a great option for couples or small groups because the price is for the entire shuttle, and up to 3 people in the van with you.

If you are traveling with a small group, it is a fast and affordable option. The ride in a private shuttle will take a little over two hours with normal traffi,c and the driver will drop you off at your hotel in Valladolid.

Basic Info

  • Duration: 2 hours direct (no stops)
  • Cost: $359 USD (up to 3 passengers) | $700 USD round-trip
  • Luxury option: $639 USD (up to 6 passengers, SUV)

  • Can arrange stops at cenotes

5. Taxi from Cancun to Valladolid (not recommended)

This option is the least recommended, as it will be much more expensive than the ones mentioned above.

If you decide you want to go to Valladolid and do not arrange a private shuttle, you can pay for a taxi to drive you there.

It can seem a little shocking that any old taxi will drive you hours away from where you get into it, but there is a reason- they will charge you a lot for the service.

Often, taxi drivers see this type of fare as a great way to make a lot of money, and you will have to negotiate very hard to get a fair price.

Unfortunately, taxis at the Cancun airport are notorious for overcharging tourists.

It is best to plan ahead and book a private shuttle, but if you do decide to take a taxi, make sure you establish the rate with the driver before getting in.

Basic Info

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Cost: $200-400+ USD
  • Availability: At airport and hotels

Why Avoid Taxis

Cancun airport taxis are notorious for overcharging tourists. Drivers quote $300-400 for the journey. Even with hard negotiating, you’ll pay significantly more than a pre-booked private transfer ($359).

If you must take a taxi:

  • Negotiate price BEFORE getting in
  • Get it in writing
  • Expect to pay $200+ minimum
  • Be prepared for stressful haggling

Pros & Cons

✅ Pros:

  • Available immediately (no pre-booking needed)

❌ Cons:

  • Extremely expensive
  • Drivers known for tourist scams
  • Stressful negotiating
  • No fixed pricing
  • Often uninsured vehicles

Best for: Emergency situations only. Otherwise, book a private transfer for better service at lower cost.

    1. Hello Carrol,

thanks for writing, you won’t find a private shuttle/car for 300 pesos to go from Cancun to Valladolid. The company I recommend charges 300 USD, maybe you will find a taxi for a little less but I would rather go with a reputable company unless somebody else recommended a specific driver. Or there is always the ADO. Quite comfortable. I hope it helps.:)
