In 2024, a new ruling extended that authorization to include Cancun International Airport specifically. Uber responded by launching a product called Uber Taxi, designed to connect passengers with certified, airport-authorized drivers. In theory, you open the app, select Uber Taxi, enter your destination, see a fixed fare, and get assigned a driver.

What Booking Uber Taxi at the Airport Actually Looks Like

Here is what happens if you open the Uber app standing outside Cancun airport arrivals in 2026: instead of the usual UberX, the main option you will see is Uber Taxi. Same app, same tracked ride and upfront price, but the car that arrives is a regular authorized airport taxi, and the price is the taxi price, not the Uber price you are used to.

You are essentially using the app as a booking tool for the same taxis waiting outside, which does have real advantages: no negotiating, no overcharging, the route on your screen, and a receipt.

Downtown to downtown: no issues. Cars arrive quickly, prices run well below taxi rates, and this is where I use the app without thinking twice.

Downtown to the Hotel Zone: allowed and generally no problem, as long as you are not requesting the car from right beside a taxi stand. Walk a block away first.

Hotel Zone to anywhere: this is the friction zone. The Hotel Zone is taxi territory, and drivers risk trouble picking you up there, so many decline. The workaround that actually works: take the R-1 or R-2 bus out of the Hotel Zone toward downtown, get off after the boulevard ends, and request your Uber from there. Coming back, an Uber can usually drop you at your Hotel Zone hotel without any issue; drop-offs are not the problem, pickups are.

The golden rule everywhere: never request a pickup within sight of a taxi stand (taxi de sitio). It puts your driver in an awkward spot and occasionally gets rides canceled. A block of distance solves everything.

Fares are generally lower than taxis, and the app works well throughout the Hotel Zone and downtown Cancun.

How to use DiDi in Cancun:
